calli_studies!

some progress... i did some range study of the phrase: me, a women; big, bold, spirited

i kinda like some of the results i made. must be the arabic groove i listened to while doing the calligraphy. next i wanna do some studies putting them onto grids.

trying hard..! process book due very very very soon!

oh i just realised my family's toothpaste has jawi at the back! cool stuff!

still on raya fever

i went visiting during deepavali. well, it is still syawal now. i guess yesterday will be the last day for visiting for me. it is impossible to try meet everyone during the month of syawal, during hari raya. by right eidulfitri is just one day. and it is the most magnificent and joyous day for all muslims. but during the month of syawal, we can go visit our relatives and friends.

yesterday i went to my junior college friends' houses plus our teachers! i just miss them so much! really too much in fact. i miss the times we had consultations after consultations, practising for concerts and performing. i was so alive!

at a few houses, i saw some really awesome calligraphy hung on their walls. here are some photos. nice visual reference to top up my list of visual inspirations for my project.

oh ya.. i suggested to my mum to cook broad beans for my friends. but unfortunately, it was too late and since we had too many houses to cover yesterday, my house could not be visited. boy i am so sad! but it's ok. i pray we will all have another chance to gather again next year and i will make sure my house is the first few next time round!

i re-fined my tool

i realised that the way the ink flows on my pen is a little odd. it felt comfortable at first but after a while as i am exploring the pen, i realised the ink runs out quickly even though i dip and scoop quite an amount of ink.

so i changed the angle and now when i write the ink reservoir/storage is facing the paper. and it works!

i am working on my process book and a range of study of the phrases i decided to focus on this semester. been making grids and understanding them. looks easy and fast, but it gave me a neck ache and a dozing head. i have to admit my grids are so imperfect! but it's ok! i am a first timer.

i love how the grids led me to something else. i see more than just one shape or possibility.. but myriads. maybe that's the beauty of  the act of relooking and relooking and the visual experience get richer and richer.

i should make my patterns have this level of sophistication.

i fed my fetish.

i honestly could not resist papers!

after meeting prof astrid,  i was motivated to go PS and indulge myself in pretty printed/handmade papers. i was looking out for something tt speaks of zahir and batin and of course the nice tessellation my patterns could be inspired by.

and some papers have nice back texture of printing too. it was like a double satisfaction.i didnt wanna leave the shop. but yea i had to stop when i realise one of the papers i bought was 5.75 SGD! but it was real beautiful and worth it. so i dont mind. i dont mind as long it is for fyp.

ya all in the name of fyp.

i love the texture, and the interplay of patterns.

this one has a vanish layer on top for front page

i love this one for its colours, really pretty. i feel dreamy looking at it.

this one is actually has a die-cut

this one has a velvet texture.

this one is the handmade silk screen

fabric printing methods

a night of explorations

i was really getting the hang of my new tool. i need to be an expert in it. the whole night i was putting my mood and self in the arabic world. i was listening to the new cd i bought. and yeap was humming to it.

i was really enjoying myself. and i am quite happy with a pattern i came up with. still very raw but i think it speaks out what i want to portray. i need prof astrid feedback though. it was a blessing that my mother invited her best friend over. she helped me transcribe the english words. since she was malay-educated; meaning she wrote jawi for her whole school life, plus been in an arabic school before and have taught in an arabic school before as an ustazah. i felt so blissful. like i can see a glimmer of light coming through.

here are some shots i documented, for the ease of research submission book due on the 8th november i think!
