The Royal Mint’s New Reverse Coins in the UK have won their designer a Black Pencil at the D&AD Awards ceremony held in London, June 11. Matt Dent won the Black Pencil for the reverse design on the coins, which were chosen by the Royal Mint Advisory Committe from over 4,000 entries to a public competition. The Royal Mint Advisory Committee selected Matthew’s concept and design because of his respect for the British traditions of heraldry combined with a contemporary, fresh approach to the project.
Matt’s initials, “M.D.”, can be seen embedded in the Shield’s edge on most of the coins. The six designs on the 1p through to the 50p coins can be pieced together to form a complete image of the royal shield of arms. The £1 coin features the complete shield.
Matthew Dent is part of the creative team at established design practice 3 fish in a tree, London.
